Club History

The Y’s Men Club of Sharjah began its humble journey on 28 April 2006 with 17 dedicated Charter Members. Its foundation was inspired and guided by Ym. K.P. Varghese, District Governor of District 08 (South West India Region – SWIR), whose vision and encouragement, together with the commitment of Charter Member Ym. Cherian Thomas, emphasized the importance of building a club in Sharjah that could strengthen family bonds and foster meaningful societal involvement.

From its inception, the Club has grown steadily and purposefully, much like a mighty tree branching out and bearing fruits of service, fellowship, and social commitment. Today, as we celebrate our 20th year, YMC Sharjah proudly stands as the largest club in the Middle East Region, with more than 50 active members, and remains a strong supporter of the India Area.

The first orientation meeting was held on 3 February 2006 at the residence of Mr. Jacob C. Jacob, attended by 13 members. Prof. Jacob Cherian of YMC Dubai spoke passionately about the charisma of Y’s Men and their relevance in today’s challenging and competitive world, inspiring four more members to join and complete the body of 17 Charter Members.

The Club was officially chartered on 1 March 2006 and inaugurated on 28 April 2006 at the Kempinski Hotel, Ajman, in the presence of distinguished leaders from the India Area. The ceremony was presided over by Ym. K.P. Varghese, inaugurated by Ym. PWAF M.V. Gopalan, India Area President, and graced by motivational addresses from Ym. V.A.A. Shukhur, Regional Director SWIR, alongside dignitaries from YMC Dubai. Under the leadership of Ym. V.C. Roy and his team of office bearers, the 17 Charter Members were inducted and installed, marking the beginning of a vibrant journey.

YMC Sharjah soon witnessed the formation of a new Gulf District (District 10 under SWIR), inaugurated by Ym. V.A.A. Shukhur. Ym. Prof. Jacob Cherian was appointed the first District Governor, with Ym. Joby Joshua as District Governor Elect. As the Gulf clubs grew, the Middle East Region (MER) was established, and YMC Sharjah became part of it. Later, the Region was further structured into three Districts (1, 2 & 3) and two Zones (1 & 2), with Sharjah continuing its active role in Zone 1, District 2.

Throughout its history, YMC Sharjah has embodied the motive and objectives of Y’s Men International:

  • To unite members in a spirit of fellowship and mutual support.

  • To promote family bonding and inclusivity.

  • To serve the community with commitment, compassion, and responsibility.

  • To support the YMCA and advance the ideals of Christian service and social betterment.

As we look ahead, YMC Sharjah remains steadfast in its mission: to serve with purpose, to inspire through fellowship, and to build a stronger, more caring society in the Middle East and beyond.
